This case study covers a state-owned telecom operator in East Africa with 46 million subscribers. It is part of one of the fastest-growing economies with a lot of untapped business potential. Target to reach 50% sales digitization seemed far fetched due to low smartphone penetration, low literacy rate, and high internet and data costs. However, SDS assisted the telecom operator to achieve rapid digital transformation and growth regardless of these conditions.
Studying the market in depth and looking into consumer behavior, an appropriate solution was proposed that provided a digital way of distribution to a market that preferred vouchers. Handheld portable devices were deployed and an access point was configured on the SIM cards. This allowed the resellers of the telecom operator to access the network to conduct transactions without incurring any data costs, contributing to the bigger goal of achieving digital transformation.
